Therapy services provided are evidence-based and following a cognitive-behavioural approach. A Christian perspective can be offered if requested. The approach Dr. Reynolds uses involves developing strategies that the client can try out between sessions, with an ultimate goal of helping each person succeed independently. The goal is to create real-world change as quickly as possible. Therapy is hard work! Areas of focus include:
- Repetitive behaviours, such as trichotillomania (hair-pulling)
- Obsessive-compulsive difficulties for children and adults
- Pastoral Staff Wellness
TRICHOTILLOMANIA AND SKIN PICKING
Sometimes, people get stuck in habits that are hard to break. This is especially true when the habit is something that is embarrassing, as the person often suffers in silence.
Most of us will pull unwanted hairs or pick at skin from time to time. But, for some people, this becomes an everyday activity that can get out of control. About 1% of all people have severe difficulties with pulling their own hair or picking at their skin too much; that would mean that these challenges affect about 10,000 people in the Edmonton area!
If you suffer with this, you are not alone. Though there is no ‘magic solution’ to solving these kinds of issues, there are strategies we can develop to help you address these habits.
OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER
People with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) experience difficulties with thoughts and behaviours that they do over and over again, even though they may not fully understand why they do them or even want to do them. These are often embarrassing, and adults as well as children with OCD often go for years without getting assistance because they feel they are the only ones in the world with these experiences. In fact, in any given year, more than 1 in 100 people will experience these kinds of challenges, so they are really not that unusual.
We use evidence-based cognitive-behavioural strategies to address these challenges. This treatment involves work and courage from the client, and we strive to help the person make positive changes at just the right rate of speed (sometimes very fast, sometimes more gradual).
